Jersey Post is to trial Secure Drop a service that allows a household to nominate an alternative delivery location at your property for larger items too big for the letter box.
Why should Jersey Post need to try this service. Why fix something that isn't really broken.
1. It will make the delivery round more complicated for the postman because for each house he will have to know the secure location and which house participates and which house doesn't.
2. If you nominate a Secure Drop area responsibility for the parcel rests with the recipient. Therefore if it is not there when you get home who is to say it was ever delivered.
3. What is wrong with going to collect your parcel from the Post Office or arranging alternative delivery.
4. If the parcel is left surely it will leave less for postal workers at HQ to do and at the collection office. Does this not raise questions of security.
5. If you want to use Secure Drop you have to provide ID for the service when you sign up. So it is just as easy to produce your driving licence when you collect that one off package.
6. It is another added hassle that you have to cancel the service when you move house.
7. If Jersey Post persist with using different postmen on the rounds doesn't it widen the risk that when temporary staff are used at busy times temporary staff will know the Secure Drop location.
8. Secure Drop cannot be used for residents of lodging houses, flats or businesses.
9. Among the other requirements the Secure Drop location must be accessed by Jersey Post without requiring a key or access code. Hmm, so if they can access it, who else can.
I wonder whether this brilliant idea will catch on. I have my doubts
