Poor Politicians

There is something unseemly at the moment in Jersey politics and as i have referred to before rather than the emergency sitting of the States this week. It is the self obsession of some of the politicians in our midst that we have elected or in the case of some Deputies and Constables not had the chance to elect. Then there is the paranoia of some politicians. There is the apparent arrogance of others towards their electorate and even toward business. There are those who have been anonymous since their election or those who have reneged on their word. Politicians in Jersey at present seem to be ineffective and not looking after their constituents. Maybe this has all occurred since politicians were salaried - at the expense of the taxpayer.

Sorry I disagree with this statement. SS looks after his constituents and would probably not be a politician if there was no salary attached. Thank goodness we pay them as it provides a gateway for ordinary good folk to stand. We need ordinary folk in the states to make it better for ordinary folk.

Give us an example of how the ordinary politicians in the States have made it better for ordinary folk.

Would this be GST on food? Would this be the brilliant employment laws flouted by employers throughout the Island.

I think there is a lot of politicians looking after constituents; it just doesn't make headline news very often. In St Brelade, Sean Power has been active with getting allotments areas and stopping a bus shelter area near the park in St Brelade's Bay being used as a dustbin site. Ian Gorst is bringing in a redundancy law, and I would say is a politician with a social conscience; he's working with Geoff Southern - it can be done! Ian Le Marquand kept an election pledge in his vote on GST. It is just a case of looking at the less flamboyant antics.

I suppose what is disappointing is that there are a couple of politicians constantly making headlines and perhaps are providing a distortion and obscuring the work done by other politicians.

Jersey 24/7.

I understand and share your dissapointment in our politicians as a whole.

Another chap who seems to fly under the radar is Deputy Bob Hill. Although he is not my parish deputy I have witnessed some of the good work he has done for his parishioners, including review board hearings.

He has brought quite a few poigniant propositions to the States, including the review into the non elected members. He also campaigns tirelessly and quietly on Human Rights issues and for an ex top cop in Brixton for some 30 years I believe, this is very suprising a cop fighting for human rights.

The newer States members are really showing promise and giving me some hope. Trevor Pitman, Mike Higgins and Montford Tadier have not been backward in coming forward.
